CCTV Inspection: The Best Self-Training Methods

Training to be a good CCTV inspection operator doesn’t happen by accident; it requires careful and thoughtful planning.

Many operators are asked to begin inspecting pipe after only receiving a few days of orientation and a few hours of on the job training. If you want to become a good CCTV inspector here are four main areas that you need to learn and practice:

  1. Safety and Setups
  2. Safety Regulations in the workplace are of utmost importance in Australia – and often have legal implications for each and every member working on a particular job. Not only do you need to learn the correct safety procedure for operations, but also it’s important to take into consideration the impact your work may have on the surrounding to the inspection and plan for it.
  3. Equipment Care and Maintenance
    The success of a CCTV inspection program could come down to your ability to fix broken equipment and keep it working in the field. Configuring the CCTV camera and crawler for various pipe sizes and performing regular preventive maintenance is important – especially due to the often dirty environments you will be operating within. A good operator should learn how to make minor repairs and how to diagnose major ones.
  4. Inspection Software and Data Management
    Your overall success will depend greatly on your ability to learn the inspection software thoroughly. Familiarity with computers and computer terminology – and in particular with the structure of the software used on your device will greatly increase the speed and efficiency with which you can create a deliver a report. The inspection itself is often only half the battle.
  5. Inspecting Pipe
    This is the core of your function. With your initial training, you will be able to drive a camera down a line and make correct observations.  Look for examples of high-quality inspection videos as a guide for what you will be looking for and when you begin making reports, have an experienced operator check the results to ensure it is meeting the required quality standards.
